Access Control

Contactless access cards are increasingly found in office buildings, parking areas and skiing resorts. Such systems usually use 125 kHz cards with embedded unique number. Readers are mounted at the entrance and exit, and these are connected to a computer. In the access control software, each card is assigned to the doors it can open by day and hour (where necessary). The software registers all attempts to open a door, the time of entry and exit and other information. This can be used for tracking the office hours, the time spent in a parking facility, a swimming pool or another, and number of rides on a ski lift, to mention but a few.
The tag can be a card, a key ring, a watch, sticker or another.
An added advantage in the use of RFID for access control is the low price of the systems, the easy maintenance and high level of security and efficiency.
Even though this application has been known for long, there is potential for further development, including:
  • use of write-many tags. In this way the information is updated and the system can operate in an autonomous regime, with several points not connected to the centralized database.
  • Use of the same tag for several items and/or applications. Example: the card used to open the door to your hotel room is also used for payment of other hotel services, such as the gym or restaurant. It is the perfect solution for hotels offering All-inclusive packages.
  • Use of RFID stickers on frequently used items (cell phone is one example), which eliminates the need to also carry a card.
