Electronic Payments

Contactless technologies have made a breakthrough on the market of e-payments.
They offer:
  • fast transaction a person or a vehicle passes through a payment point. This is made possible by the distance reading of the tag. Examples: ski lifts, public transportation cards, toll roads;
  • security – the unique number embedded in the tag can be sent to the reader in a codified form. Additionally, a PIN code may be required.
    Contactless settlements are usually for small amounts which further limits the risk.

E-payments are becoming increasingly popular in:
  • road toll payment, without having to stop the vehicle. Such systems use active tags which are attached to the windshield. The vehicle slows down at the entrance and exit of a toll road and is thus recognized and the due toll is charged to a pre-paid account;
  • public transport passes. These are usually 13.56 Mhz cards because of the high level of security and the standardized communication with the readers (ISO14443). As a tag passes close to a reader, the due charge is credited to the pre-paid card;
  • skiing passes;
  • bank cards. The obvious advantage of the contactless cards to the contact chip cards is the reason for an ever increasing number of banks to offer on the market products such as Visa Contactless and MasterCard PayPass. These credit cards are ISO 14443-compliant and are accepted in millions of retail facilities across the world.
